The GIVE Program

The Get Into Vocational Education (GIVE) Program is a partnership between GAGAL, Central State School and QUT. It is fully understood that young people start disengaging from the education sector at around Year 4, so it was decided that we should target that year level with an innovative program designed to keep them at school and a program that would improve the literacy and numeracy skills.

The initiative for the GIVE program first came from the GAGAL “What’s my Trade?” event, which we have been successfully delivering to Central Queensland and other regions for 5 years. The hands on activities engage young people and they became very enthusiastic about the event.

Central State School were keen to participate and a group of year 4’s were identified for the pilot program. A joint submission by GAGAL and QUT was made to the Rio Tinto Alcan Community Fund for funding to allow the pilot program to go ahead.

The pilot program began at the beginning of 4th term and will complete 2 weeks prior to the end. There has already been a marked change in the young people and their numeracy skills have improved tremendously.

QUT will present their report to the Rio Tinto Alcan Community Fund Board when it has been completed and it will be published on this website.

This is what some of the Central State School participants and teachers, have had to say about the GAGAL GIVE program...

I would like to say a huge thank you to you and your staff, in particular, Mr Bill Hermann and Mr Mike Young, for making a valuable contribution to the learning of a group of yuear 4 students for Gladstone Central State School.Ms Teena Cahill Gladstone Central State School

GAGAL always makes sure that we do things safely. Some of the safety equipment are old clothes, safety glasses and closed in shoes. Safety is very important otherwise you could get injured. If you are not on your best behaviour during class you will not go to GAGAL. Mr Hermann calls it good GAGAL behaviour.

I love going to GAGAL because it's a great experience to use different tools like a hammer, disc sander, drill press, electric drill, paint brush, electric screw driver, nail punch and a jig.

I didn't know that I could build stuff but with Mr Herman's help I did. I made a model tow truck with everyone else. I was lucky to go to GAGAL at grade 4 instead of grade 10

I've learned about working in a team and that people are the same even if they might not like the same thing. I think GAGAL should be on next year because it's lots of fun and we learn new skills. GAGAL ROCKS

At the beginning of this term, I went to GAGAL to learn about mathematics by building things. You learn lots from GAGAL. It is important to listen to Mr Hermann. If you don't, he will wait until you stop. I like building stuff like the tow truck, the planter box and the trinket box.
